about

Some background to the “Stolen Moments” collection.

These works recall chance momentary encounters with strangers – usually ordinary people doing ordinary things. Think of the lonely characters you find in the paintings of Edward Hopper. Often, these moments might slip by unnoticed, but sometimes they lodge deep in the memory and may surface unbidden from time to time.

The sky is taking on light is about delivering newspapers in a suburban area very early in the morning – delivering and reinforcing various interpretations of realities to different homes. This piece is, in part, autobiographical.

Into the sunlight recalls a momentary smile across a fountain in a town square.

Bookmarks is about a young person sitting on a wooden bench, buried deep in a book.

Courier is about those people who deliver our online shopping. It has an Eastern European flavour, recalling the music of Mákvirág.

If you can’t be the sun, be a star – a street sweeper who moves alone and unnoticed through busy crowds in city centres.

Alone in the café tells of the young person manning the train station kiosk – literally watching the world passing him by.

about

David Ashworth Sheffield, UK

My music draws its inspiration from the things I see, the things I remember, the things I read and the things I hear.

These ‘things’ have included:

paintings and sculptures
childhood and more recent memories of often small events which I still think of as significant.

The world around me – from the tops of mountains to bus stops in quiet suburban streets.
